Honolulu’s Department of Planning and Permitting defines short-term rentals as stays of fewer than 30 consecutive nights. Many condo buildings that do not allow nightly or weekly vacation rentals still allow 30-day minimum leases or longer, depending on condominium building rules and zoning.

The Hawaii Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT), administered and collected by the Hawaii Department of Taxation, applies to short-term rental activity (including Waikiki rentals of fewer than 180 consecutive nights). Long-term rentals in Waikiki of 6 months and longer are not subject to the TAT.
