Service members and their families may have questions to help prepare for a TDY assignment, and it’s essential to start planning early in the assignment process. Preparation is critical to making the most of your assignment.
What is TDY?
A temporary duty assignment (TDY) for military personnel, civilians, or government contractors requires a temporary relocation to perform duties at a location other than the permanent duty station. These assignments are often for a limited time for business, training, or attendance at a school.
How Long is a TDY Assignment?
The duration of a TDY assignment is typically less than 180 days. The proponent’s specific needs determine the assignment’s length, ensuring service members or government travelers have adequate time to complete their tasks without a PCS (Permanent Change of Station). TDY assignments help fulfill mission-critical objectives by providing personnel opportunities to gain new skills and experiences and complete work without permanently relocating military or government personnel.
What is the Per Diem Lodging Rate?
Per diem is an allowance for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses. The US General Services Administration (GSA) establishes rates for 48 states, and for the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) establishes the Per Diem Rates for Hawaii and Alaska. The per diem allowance is a daily lodging and meals rate to cover living expenses for the duration of the assignment—the per diem paid on a pre-determined locality rate of the authorized stopover point or official duty location. What are the Different Types of TDY Assignments?
Professional Training and Development: Military and government Schools and private sector training are common TDY assignments. Specialized military training programs, workshops, or seminars offer the opportunity to enhance skills or develop new on-the-job qualifications at a location where the training is not available at the home station.
Operational Support: TDY assignments may be required to meet a specific mission or augment a unit for operational needs such as exercises, pre-deployment, or disaster relief assistance. Participation in combined services or joint military exercises may require travel within the Continental United States (CONUS) or Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS).
Meetings and Conferences: Meetings or trade conferences may require in-person attendance by military or government employees and contractors. Participation in policy development meetings, planning sessions, or gatherings with in-person interaction can be more successful when face-to-face meetings are possible.
Project-Specific: Temporary assignments to achieve a specific product, service, or result. Specific projects or initiatives may require specialized knowledge or skills. Site assistance visits or inspections such as financial audits, compliance reviews, or safety inspections may be necessary at military bases to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
Research and Development: Performing scientific research and development opportunities may necessitate in-person meetings and reviews.
Fieldwork: Military or civilian construction projects, environmental monitoring, and collecting geological samples in specific or remote locations may be required to achieve specific research objectives.
Logistical Management and Preparation
Moving can be stressful, and there are a lot of considerations when preparing for a TDY Assignment. Some things to consider:
Financial Planning: It can take several months to be fully reimbursed for travel expenses, including lodging for a hotel or extended stay rental, lodging taxes, airfare, rental car, meals, and incidental expenses. Requesting a credit limit increase to the highest available amount if using a government travel card to pay for lodging or short-term rental housing is advisable.
Family Resources and Readiness
The military services have made significant strides to improve the services available to servicemembers and their families, and many of these services are available on every major military installation.
Family Readiness Groups (FRGs): Readiness groups are at the forefront of military organizations to prepare and assist servicemembers and families with deployment and relocation assistance and counseling.
Spouse Clubs: Most military units have formal or informal spouse clubs that offer a range of activities, including social events and volunteer opportunities. These clubs are a great way to meet other spouses, share experiences, and receive mutual support.
Military OneSource: This is a free online resource for military servicemembers and their families. Military OneSource offers confidential support and information 24/7 for military members and their families. Services include counseling, help with child care, personal finance, education, and more.
