The Navy Lodge Hawaii is the on-base Pearl Harbor Lodging Facility, and it is located on Ford Island. The Navy Lodge Hawaii is approximately 15 minutes from Honolulu International Airport (HNL). Taxi services are available to and from the airport. Base transportation is unavailable for guests at the Navy Lodge at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The Navy Lodge recommends that travelers secure authorization for a rental car or make alternative transportation arrangements. Available room types at the hotel include business class rooms, standard rooms, family suites, and disability-accessible rooms. Amenities include Wi-Fi Internet, coin-operated vending machines, coin-operated laundry machines, a swimming pool, a meeting space, and an outdoor playground.

Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS) Pearl Harbor

NGIS facilities are for authorized Active Duty and Reserve military travelers, DoD civilians, and contractors on official travel orders to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH). Active duty military and their dependents on leave and retirees may stay on a space-available basis (Space-A). Several of the temporary lodging facilities offer rooms that meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam lodging eligibility varies, and reservations are available based on duty status and space availability. Temporary Duty personnel may be required to use on-base government lodging when directed by their command. Within each lodging priority, reservations and assignments can be made on a first-come, first-served basis without regard to rank or grade.

Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) for Permanent Change of Station (PCS)
Travelers may secure a letter of non-availability from the NGIS if on-base lodging is unavailable. TLA rates for a PCS are based on the member’s duty status, single or married, and the number and age of dependents. Accompanied dependents must be command sponsored to receive TLA entitlements.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam Mission

JBPHH became fully operational in 2010 when the two historic bases merged. The joint installation supports Air Force and Navy missions, including tenant commands and support services, housing, and temporary lodging for service members and their families. The main objective of the base merger was to increase warfighting readiness, maximize delivery of installation support services, and increase efficiencies to the military’s mission in the Pacific. Combining these historic bases into a single joint installation increases capacity and capability for the region’s Air Force and Navy missions.

The Navy Region Hawaii is the command that supports sailors and their families. It comprises about 15,000 sailors, including 8,000 Navy personnel serving on ships, submarines, and aircraft. In addition to the servicemembers assigned to the region, there are approximately 20,000 Navy dependents and another 9,000 civilians in the Navy workforce, and there are thousands of retired and reserve Navy personnel and their families residing permanently in Hawaii.

The Navy Region Hawaii oversees Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy’s most significant and strategic island base in the Pacific. The Navy region extends over 23,000 acres of land and water on Oahu and Kauai. It hosts the headquarters of seven major Navy commands, including the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The Hawaii Regional Maintenance Center (HRMC) at Pearl Harbor conducts ship maintenance, resupply, and refit operations for the Pacific Fleet, which serves as a one-stop regional maintenance center for the Navy’s surface ships and submarines. The shipyard at Pearl Harbor enables the fleet to perform complex maintenance operations and deliver submarines back into service at sea on time. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is the largest industrial employer in Hawaii, with a combined civilian and military workforce of approximately 6,500. It is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East, strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, and takes about a week to reach Asia. The U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet is vital to maintaining freedom of navigation and movement of commercial and private shipping in the Pacific.

The U.S. Navy’s ability to rapidly deploy and support the fleet from Pearl Harbor is paramount to employing above and undersea warfare capabilities. The U.S. Navy’s carrier force is vital to providing air superiority, the destroyer force is vital to delivering missile capabilities, and the submarine force is vital in the undersea domain. The Pacific Fleet’s unique presence in Hawaii and the Indo-Pacific region enables the U.S. Navy to deter and respond to crises and conflicts and support various missions.

Air Force Specific Mission
Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) is the major command, headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, and is one of nine U.S. Air Force major commands and the air component of U.S. Pacific Command. PACAF’s primary mission is to plan, conduct, and coordinate offensive and defensive air operations in the Pacific and Asian theaters. JBPHH and the Daniel K Inouye International Airport (HNL) function as a joint military-civilian airport sharing airfield facilities and are regarded as one of the busiest airports in the United States.

The PACAF Mission
PACAF’s primary mission is to support operations in the Ind-Pacific by delivering rapid and precise air, space, and cyberspace capabilities. As the Major Command (MAJCOM) in the region, the role of PACAF is to protect and defend the United States, its territories, and the United States’ allies and partners; provide integrated air and missile warning and defense; promote interoperability throughout the Pacific area of responsibility; maintain strategic access and freedom of movement across all domains; and posture to respond across the full spectrum of military contingencies to maintain regional security.

Strategic Air Mobility
Hickam AFB runway supports the largest aircraft in the Air Force fleet and is a launch point for strategic air mobility missions. Operations include airlift, air refueling, aeromedical evacuation, air mobility ground support, and command and control of strategic airlift capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Operational Missions
Hickam AFB has been a significant support base for operational missions, including, in recent years, the Global War on Terrorism. The command has approximately 46,000 military and civilian personnel serving nine strategic locations in Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, Guam, and Korea.

Special Air Missions
Hickam AFB supports special air missions for the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) and Commander, Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). Many of these special missions also provide airlift, logistics, aerial port, and communications for the presidential administration, combatant commanders, and other senior military and elected leaders while traveling to and from the region. The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) also performs global operations, including infiltration, exfiltration, precision application of firepower, personnel recovery, and various other missions.

NASA Support
Hickam AFB has gained traction in the news for supporting NASA’s Human Space Flight program. A recent event included deploying a liaison team and a U.S. Air Force Guardian Angel Pararescue team, also known as PJs, for NASA’s SpaceX Demonstration Mission 2. In other recent events, Airmen from the Hawaii Air National Guard have provided logistical support to NASA astronaut rescue and recovery missions.

Disaster Aid and Humanitarian Relief
Team Hickam has supported disaster relief efforts, such as flying a C-17 Globemaster III to transport personnel and equipment to Maui to help with wildfire recovery in 2023. The location of Hawaii in the Pacific also serves as a central logistical point for disaster aid and relief efforts for many other islands and countries throughout the Pacific region.

Navy Specific History

Pearl Harbor was established as a Naval Base in 1908. It is a national historic landmark because of its essential contribution to the rise of the U.S. as a significant power in the Pacific and its crucial role in World War II, beginning with the December 7, 1941 attack.

Air Force Specific History

Established as Hickam Field in 1938, the installation was later re-designated as Hickam Air Force Base in 1957 with the formation of Headquarters Pacific Air Force (PACAF). The unification of Pacific Air Forces as a unified command was a historic “first” in which all USAF fighting forces assigned to the Pacific and Far East areas were consolidated under one command.
